| Pogo sticks have been
around for a while. It was an American fad in the 1950s
until rumors of kids damaging internal organs and spine from over
jostling scared everyone, including my parents. Fortunately that
rumor has been discounted but pogo sticks never regained their nationwide
popularity. They've become more of a niche product appreciated by
small but loyal groups who have now invigorated the pogo stick with
new technology.
A little known fact is that using pogo sticks is a great
way to exercise. You can use a basic model to exercise
safely indoors. It has been estimated that one hour of hopping
is equivalent to a workout that burn 2000 calories. The
legs and lower body are used for powering and your arms and upper
body are used for balance and to hang on for your life, when you're
hopping 4 to 7 feet in the air. |

are the same as the original, body weight and jumping
inertia compressing a coil spring for
power. However many models are better designed and engineered than
their predecessors. Today's best coil spring models can attain 2
feet plus in elevation and cost under a $100.
A number of high end models feature "rubber band" type
of action. The body weight and jumping inertia stretch these "elastometric
springs" for energy much like a trampoline
effect. These models typically sell for $200 and up depending
on the number of these rubber springs used and can go over
4 to 6 feet in elevation.
The third type of pogo stick mechanism is the compressed
air models. Like a rubber ball, more the
air is compressed by adding, higher the bounce. The pogo stick world
record height of over 7 feet is held by
a Vurtego compressed air model that sell for about
