According to Wikipedia, costuming
for Halloween parties in the US became popular
around the 1900s. The first commercially made costumes
became available in the 1930s coinciding with the spread of trick-or-treating
as a popular Halloween activity throughout the nation.
Halloween is a time of celebration, infused with many beliefs and
traditions, from the ancient Celt's Samhain, a
celebration of the end of the harvest season, to the early Christian's
All Saints Day, a celebration of the martyrdom
of Saints which have evolved to the celebration of the dead in general.
The theme of Halloween costumes follow these ideas and pumpkins,
scarecrows, witches, skeletons
and ghosts became the standard images of Halloween.

| Along with the classic horror movie
characters like Frankenstein, Dracula,
Wolfman and the Mummy, popular
subjects are what are hot in the movies today. In 2007, that would
be pirates as in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean
and the young wizards of the Harry Potter movie.
In short all popular heroes and villains
of today and in the past are popular subjects for Halloween costumes.
Today's Halloween costumes can be anything in the spirit of the
celebration, as in the Mardi Gras. It can be a
walking life size mustard dispenser to a giant
rabbit or a cartoon character. However,
a big part of today's trend seem to be to come up with the most
disturbing monster imaginable, a sort of one up
man ship between wearers and catered to by over imaginative fright
masters. A difficult task in the light of today's jaded public who
have been inundated and numbed by the anything-goes onslaught of
gore and mayhem on the silver screen for decades now. There are
many mask types, that are to me, 'over-the -top' in the gore
effects and may be hazardous to someone's cardiovascular
system if suddenly come upon in a darkened stairwell or
to a little kid's well being. Apparently many people
like to look crazily horrible and the thrill of
being bad and anonymous at the same time. |
| Holiday costuming give people a chance to be accepted
temporarily as what or who ever they want to be, a king,
princess or a monster without repercussions. Perhaps
it is therapeutic like a social pressure
valve but it is undeniably great fun. Halloween
is a kid's third favorite holiday after Christmas and birthdays, it
was for me. We rarely bought a costume in our family, we thought it
was more fun making one up. With the help of a little
makeup we found it easy to look funny or scary. Our
family was large so creating a fun, raucous Halloween party was easy
and came naturally. However when we were invited to a party
we all wished we had a store bought costume. |
