Launching model rockets are great fun but require
adult supervision. Engines are solid fuel propellants
that produce high heat upon ignition and care must be taken as to
the launch location. A big open space is preferred and the potential
of starting a brush fire must be considered in dry areas. Matching
the right engine for the rocket is important. A large engine for
a small rocket will cause the rocket to disappear from view quickly
and make retrieval problematic.
Solid fuel engine power level and burn time is
designated alpha numerically as in A-5. "A" being the
smallest or weakest engine The 5 designates the number of seconds
the engine burns. The power level doubles in the letter progression.
"B" engines are twice as powerful as "A" and
so on. The purchase and use of "E" level engines and up
are age restricted to 18 years minimum. The popular Estes Wizard
rocket uses a C5-6 engine that shoots it over 1500'
up. |
